Teenagers and alcohol – an unhealthy combination

Teenagers and alcohol – an unhealthy combination

Health Weeks

27-01-2017

At this time of year, the calendar is filled with social engagements and parties. Many teenagers will spend much of the school-holiday period celebrating and spending time with their friends. Many of these functions will involve alcohol.

1491_Teenagers_and_alcoholAn Australian survey in 2013 found that the average age at which young people aged 14-24 first tried alcohol is 15.7. Approximately 86% of Australians 14 years of age and over have drunk alcohol at least once in their lives.

Alcohol acts as a central nervous system (CNS) depressant. The effect of alcohol comes from a combination of factors, including the amount of alcohol consumed and various other factors such as age, gender, body size, nutrition, and drinking experience. Alcohol consumption affects not only the person drinking, but everyone in the community. It is estimated that alcohol costs the Australian community over $15 billion a year. These costs relate to health problems, accidents, crime, violence, social issues, and loss of productivity. Read More >

Health & Wellness

Did you know that dementia is not a single condition or disease and the symptoms of dementia can be caused by over 100 different disorders that affect the brain?

1500_DementiaAccording to Alzheimer’s Australia, dementia describes a collection of symptoms that are caused by disorders affecting the brain. It is not one specific disease. Dementia affects thinking, behaviour and the ability to perform everyday tasks. Brain function is affected enough to interfere with the person’s normal social or working life.

The most common causes of dementia include Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies. Dementia may also be associated with other conditions including Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, alcohol abuse, AIDS and Down’s syndrome. Dementia affects different people in different ways depending on the type of dementia they have and the area of the brain that is damaged. Read More >

Australia Day

Australia Day

Our pharmacy services

26-01-2017

The tradition of having Australia Day as a national holiday on 26 January is a recent one. Not until 1935 did all the Australian states and territories use that name to mark that date. Not until 1994 did they begin to celebrate Australia Day consistently as a public holiday on that date.

There are a number of ceremonial aspects to many Australia Day events which have become both a tradition and a symbol of our national day. If you’re organising an Australia Day event these ceremonies can add meaning to your day. Australia Day ceremonies can include:

– citizenship ceremonies
– affirmation ceremonies
– the Australian flag and flag flying
– Australian national anthem
– Australia day ambassador program.

On Australia Day we recognise the unique status of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The National Australia Day Council (NADC) is committed to playing a part in the journey of Reconciliation by helping all Australians to move forward with a better understanding of our shared past, and importantly how this affects the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today and how we might build a better future together.

“I am happy to recommend your store, business and staff to other customers wishing to experience the ultimate service.”
Thank you for the prompt delivery and excellent service in regards to my Coco Chanel perfume I purchased last week.

It arrived within 2 days of ordering, which I was surprised being Xmas time, so this completely amazed me. But what really amazed me was the hand written thank you note that I received. It was completely unexpected, but for you to write it at this busy time and send it…well, it made my purchase and this shopping experience the best I have ever had. I can only imagine if this was the best customer experience I have ever received, and being a mail order, I can only imagine the experience if I visited your store in Melbourne.

Kelly, you and your staff have brought the customer service back! You very rarely see this anymore. I am happy to recommend your store, business and staff to other customers wishing to experience the ultimate service.

I wish you all a happy and safe Christmas and New Year. Thanks for the perfume, it will make a great gift. You now have a loyal customer for life.

Kidney Health

Kidney Health

Health & Wellness

Did you know it is possible for a person to lose up to 90% of their kidney function before experiencing any symptoms of kidney disease?

1489_BBQ_for_kidney_healthChronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing public health problem. Approximately 1 in 10 Australians aged 18 and over have evidence of CKD. In CKD, the kidneys slowly stop working over a period of months or years. The kidneys have many important functions in the body, including filtering the blood and adding excess water to other wastes to produce urine. The kidneys also produce and regulate several hormones that are important for heart, blood and bone health. People with CKD are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and death, as well as anaemia and bone disease. Read More >

Facts and Fallacies about Generic Medicines

Facts and Fallacies about Generic Medicines

Health & Wellness

10-01-2017

Generic medicines have been available in Australia for 40 years, and widely supplied through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme for over 20 years, delivering the same health benefits as the original brands at a lower cost to government and the community. Through monitoring generic medicine use over this time, their role as safe & effective treatment options has been confirmed.

The following statements about generic medicines are TRUE

  • A generic medicine is simply another brand, which contains the same active ingredient as the original brand, and which is accepted to work in the same way. Therefore generic medicine is the same quality as the original brand, and meets the TGA standards of safety and performance equivalence to the original brand.
  • A generic medicine is subject to much greater government scrutiny compared to other “generic” or home brand consumer products that you buy at the supermarket. All medicines sold in Australia, whether a generic medicine or original brand, must meet the same tough quality standards set by a government agency called the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). The role of the TGA is to evaluate and verify that all prescription medicines provide an appropriate safety and performance profile. Read More >
