September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian men, with approximately 20,000 men diagnosed with the disease every year.

While five-year survival rates have increased to 95 per cent, some 3,500 men still die as a result of prostate cancer every year. Early detection is vital to get these figures down.

September is International Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, with this year’s theme being #getchecked

The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australiais encouraging all men aged over 50 to talk to their GP about prostate health and about what is best for them.

Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia CEO Jane Endacott said regular health check-ups were vital in beating the disease.

“Early detection is crucial in effectively fighting prostate cancer. Men over the age of 50 – or 40 if they have a family history of prostate cancer – need to talk with their GP about prostate health,” she said.

“If you fit the criteria make sure you get in and speak to your GP about your prostate health and remind your loved ones and friends to as well.”

More details are available at the foundations #getchecked website.

Sleep Awareness Week October 1-7

Sleep Awareness Week October 1-7

Health Weeks

This Sleep Awareness Week the Sleep Health Foundation is turning its attention to the role of caffeine in our society. Therefore we are asking “Could caffeine be masking a sleep disorder”. There can be a great deal of pleasure and positivity surrounding the drinking of caffeine. However there is also evidence to suggest that it’s time to turn the spotlight on caffeine and examine it more closely. Caffeine is a naturally occurring substance that affects the brain and behaviour. It can be found in many different drinks and foods. This includes tea, coffee, chocolate, soft drinks (particularly energy drinks) and some medications. Read More >

Spring and Hayfever

Spring and Hayfever

Health & Wellness

Spring is well and truly in full flight.

Hay fever is the common name for a condition called allergic rhinitis, which means an allergy that affects the nose.

Hay fever is caused by the nose and/or eyes coming into contact with environmental allergens, such as pollens, dust mite, moulds and animal hair.

Most people associate hay fever with spring, when airborne grass pollens are at their peak. This is known as seasonal allergic rhinitis or spring hay fever. However, hay fever can occur at any time of the year. When symptoms occur all year round, this is known as perennial allergic rhinitis. Perennial allergic rhinitis is usually caused by a reaction to allergens around the home, such as dust mites, moulds, animal hair or fur, or occupational allergens. Read More >
