How do vaccines work?

Germs are all around us, both in our environment and in our bodies. When a person is susceptible and they encounter a harmful organism, it can lead to disease and death.

The body has many ways of defending itself against pathogens (disease-causing organisms). Skin, mucus, and cilia (microscopic hairs that move debris away from the lungs) all work as physical barriers to prevent pathogens from entering the body in the first place.

When a pathogen does infect the body, our body’s defences, called the immune system, are triggered and the pathogen is attacked and destroyed or overcome.

The body’s natural response

A pathogen is a bacterium, virus, parasite or fungus that can cause disease within the body. Each pathogen is made up of several subparts, usually unique to that specific pathogen and the disease it causes. The subpart of a pathogen that causes the formation of antibodies is called an antigen. The antibodies produced in response to the pathogen’s antigen are an important part of the immune system. You can consider antibodies as the soldiers in your body’s defense system. Each antibody, or soldier, in our system is trained to recognize one specific antigen. We have thousands of different antibodies in our bodies. When the human body is exposed to an antigen for the first time, it takes time for the immune system to respond and produce antibodies specific to that antigen.

In the meantime, the person is susceptible to becoming ill.

During October we celebrated  National Pharmacies Technician Day and we’d like to say a huge THANK YOU to all our dispensary techs.
They do so much to support our customers and our pharmacists. Whether it’s dispensing prescriptions, counseling patients, packing weekly medicine packs, keeping our stock under control or ensuring our paperwork is done, they’re always here, working hard.
So to Jodie, Valerie, Dianne, Kylie, Rachel, Kylie and Gayle, thank you. We can’t do what we do without you.

We celebrate the many ways that pharmacists contribute to a world where everyone benefits from access to safe, effective, quality medicines and health technologies.
Everyday, our pharmacists help people in our communities by:
💊 providing advice on healthy living and medicines
🩺 working with doctors and other healthcare professionals to optimise your medicines
💉 vaccinating to prevent against disease
❤️ helping people improve their quality of life
We are proud to be a part of our Berwick and wider community, and we’d like to say a big THANK YOU to the pharmacists who work within our team – Pete, Stephen, Juanita, Winnie and Akram. They may look a little different this year with their face masks on, but they’re here for you.

We can accept electronic prescriptions!

We can accept electronic prescriptions!

Pharmacy news

So in a nutshell, what are electronic prescriptions?
💊 E-prescriptions allow doctors to order a medicine via a non-paper prescription. Paper prescriptions can continue to be written and dispensed.
💊 E-prescriptions can help reduce infection with paper prescriptions, and reduce transcription errors. They also prevent the problem of a lost prescription.
💊 The doctor sends it as an SMS or email straight to your mobile phone or computer.
💊 You can present the “token” on your phone to the pharmacy. It will be scanned, and dispensed straight from there.
💊 For repeats, you will receive a new token, which is scanned the next time you need the medicine.
For more information, speak to our pharmacists, or information is available via the Australian Digital Health Agency website.

We’d like to introduce you to Kylie, one of our team members.
Kylie completed her dispensary technician course in the past year, and has made herself “indispensable” (see what I did there? 😉) by being able to work in many areas of our pharmacy.
We love Kylie’s willingness to work hard and take on any role she is given. We’re so glad to have you with us, Kylie 💙💚💙
